Pseudogynecomastia is extreme fat accumulation condition which is formed around the chest region leading to the creation of the enlarged male breast which is similar to the condition of the gynecomastia. Unlike true gynecomastia, it is not caused due to the breast gland tissue. Even in the case of simple fat accumulation around chest, there is a moderate presence of glandular breast tissue.
Typically, men and boys who are experiencing weight gain in form of obesity or slight weight gain, becomes the victim of excess fat deposit around the chest region. Distinguishing the presence of glandular tissue and basic fat accumulation is challenging, but in general case of fat accumulation, excess weight is fairly distributed evenly throughout body, with accumulation of large amount of fat in chest.
Weight gain is the only medically explained disease process or reason that causes this particular pseudo-gynecomastia. However, there are well-established reasons for development of true gynecomastia. Some of the most Common ones are:
Weight Loss- Healthy weight loss through sensible exercise and a diet is the first line of treatment for excess fat deposits around chest. A high level of willpower and self discipline is required for losing weight which is difficult for some men but helps to decrease the breast size.
Oftentimes, exercise and diet cannot improve the condition of fat development around chest and hence the next logical step would be surgical correction.
Lipoplasty, also known as liposuction or lipectomy provides excellent results. Such cosmetic surgery is performed to remove unwanted fat deposits from the skin which can’t be reduced by exercise or diet. An aspiration device is used to permanently remove the fat under the skin. Issues like weight loss, skin sagging or loss of muscle mass can make the treatment of pseudogynecomastia around the chest difficult. In this case, other skin lifting procedure like mastopexy is required along with liposuction.
Also, with the case of Liposuction performed alone, some of the breast enlargement can return back post the procedure for some patients regardless of whether they had Gynecomastia or Pseudogynecomastia before the surgery.
Some surgeon uses liposuction only to treat both the cases of male breast enlargement. However, liposuction treatment is not enough for treating male breasts alone because the liposuction device cannot remove breast gland tissue. Although, sharp instruments have been devised to break down the glandular tissue and extract out the remaining fat where appearance of gland tissue become more unnatural and obvious after liposuction is performed.
